Do you dare to be yourself at your workplace?
What can we learn from kids? My latest post is about psychological safety. Kids give transparent feedback and have fun until we adults teach them to be quiet. The lucky ones work in an environment where different opinions and critical thinking is the norm. You enjoy interacting with your colleges, feel good emotionally and are more productive. It is not for every leader to create such an environment since it takes courage to be open to feedback. A company culture is created by the actions the leadership takes, not by the words spoken or values printed on the walls.
Startups often ask me when they should start thinking of the company culture. My reply is that it is never too early. As a leader and founder, you create the culture. What kind of environment would you like to spend your time in? What gets you up in the morning? Let’s be more like kids ask questions and work together, help our peers feel appreciated; that will boost our mental well-being, effectiveness and ability to innovate.
